This is the second Travel Group formed within the Blackbourne U3A. The first group, the Travel and Tourism group, having reached its membership limit. Originally called the Alternative Travel group, the name was changed to “Travel To” and more recently to “Trav2” as it was felt to be more relevant.
Goals: “Trav2” gives members of the Blackbourne U3A the opportunity to meet others with a common interest in travel and to experience the joy of travel in convivial company to places that they might otherwise not visit and to cultivate a spirit of friendship and sharing and to have fun.
Purpose: “Trav2” aims to bring together members of the Blackbourne U3A who have an interest in travel to destinations in Great Britain and further afield. We jointly discuss and plan trips for two or more members, where there is security in numbers and a shared interest, which may be cultural, educational or just the simple pleasure of the company of a friend or friends. All trips or tours are booked with registered travel agents or commercial tour organizers and payments are made directly to them. Dependent upon the numbers travelling we aim to achieve substantial discounts as compared to the prices given to individuals.
Meetings: With an increasing interest in travel in the company of others, more members of the Blackbourne U3A applied to join our group. We were faced with the challenge of starting a new Travel group or enlarging Trav2. We decided just to get bigger. As a result we now have over 100 members and no waiting list. Of course this means we had to make some changes. To accommodate the larger membership we now meet in the main hall in New Green Centre on the third Monday of each month at 10 am. We still maintain the informal atmosphere and share travel information, listen to and view presentations by Group members, Travel Companies and invited guests, on travel to interesting destinations.
Trips: With our larger membership we plan to offer a more diverse range of trips ranging from short duration coach tours in the UK and near Europe, longer duration coach trips further away and to travel even further afield by air. Group sizes can vary from 6 to 49 and may be planned and led by different group members. Our aim is to provide a variety of types of trip so that no one gets missed out and, most importantly, we all get the chance to travel in good company and continue to have fun. With so many members we will have to practice the “first come, first served principle
