BTO Thetford July 2017

12 members of the Birdwatching Group met at the slightly later time of 10:30am at the British Trust for Ornithology headquarters at the Nunnery, Thetford. The weather was cloudy but reasonably warm and no rain fell during the walk. We set off along a track which took us over the Little Ouse river which was running fast and clear. A Blackcap was heard singing in a nearby bush but it could not be seen, however, one was spotted later in the walk. We stopped to look at a tree which was known to have Owls nesting in it and also bees when a Treecreeper with its white breast proceeded to climb the tree frantically searching the bark for insects. The walk continued through a Hawthorn thicket. Amongst the Hawthorn were several large Elder bushes and several of these were festooned with the fruiting bodies of Jelly Ear Fungus.

We arrived at the main Lake and looked expectantly across to the Kingfisher bank on the far side but no Kingfishers were seen. In fact, none were seen at all during the walk although they were heard a few times. Numerous Geese and ducks were seen on the lake. We returned to the car park via a slightly different route in time to get to the pub in Elveden by 1pm. There we enjoyed a lovely meal before wending our different ways home. Thank you to Angela for organising the walk and pub. A total of 36 bird species were seen and 4 were heard only. In addition, several interesting plants were noted and thanks to Gill Heath and her diligence were identified. Particularly attractive was Marsh Woundwort which almost had the appearance of an Orchid.
