Minsmere, September 2016

A depleted but enthusiastic group of 6 met at the RSPB Minsmere visitor centre at 0945hrs. On a quick visit to the toilet block we were able to see numerous Ant Lion craters under the overhanging roof. Next we headed for the shore and on the way we saw Rabbits and a small herd of Red Deer. We stopped at the hide overlooking the East scrape and also the South hide where there were numerous Ducks including Teal, Shoveler and Pintail.

Back to the visitor centre for lunch and then on to the Bittern hide and the Island Mere hide. Disappointingly we did not see a sign of a Bittern although one had been seen earlier. A lone Marsh Harrier did put in a brief appearance. The highlight for some of the group was a sighting of a Kingfisher as it streaked across the path that runs back to the visitor centre from the South hide.

The weather was fairly good for us as it only rained briefly at the start and then stayed dry albeit a bit windy. A total of 36 bird species were seen and 3 heard. We have had better days at Minsmere but it is still a special place. Dave Shearing
